Irena Volkov is a Ph.D. Candidate in Medical Engineering and Medical Physics in the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program. She earned her B.S. in Neuroscience and an individualized minor in Bioentrepreneurship at American University. Working in the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory and the Synthetic Neurobiology Group, Irena is co-mentored by Dr. Li-Huei Tsai and Dr. Ed Boyden. Her doctoral research focuses on the intersection between neurotechnology and neurodegeneration, discovering novel tools to better understand and treat neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s. Irena is also the Founder and CEO of Surgicure Technologies, which is developing safer and more effective devices for intubation and ventilation.
